Butterfly Unit ~ Close Reading ~ Text Dependent Questions : We have developed this Common Core aligned complete Butterfly Unit with CLOSE Reading passages, text dependent questions, and essential questions that contains everything needed to teach a rigorous unit on butterflies. Four original CLOSE Reading nonfiction passages were created to help teach your students about butterflies. CLOSE reading instructions and anchor charts are included to help you incorporate this skill into your teaching. There are text dependent questions aligned with each passage, a set of vocabulary cards with definitions to accompany each nonfiction text, a research report, Common Core Essential Questions, performance tasks, and RAFTS. A variety of other graphic organizers and activities are included. This unit emphasizes "Depth of Knowledge" (D.O.K.) throughout. You can use this unit in its entirety, or “pick and choose” the components to meet the needs of your students. This unit contains the following elements: • Four CLOSE reading nonfiction passages with illustrations: 1. Introduction to Butterflies 2. The Butterfly Life Cycle 3. Butterfly Migration 4. Parts of a Butterfly • Four sets of vocabulary cards with definitions, one for each CLOSE reading passage (Lexiles range from 500-850; we provide vocabulary support to scaffold for students who need more support). • CLOSE Reading Instructions PowerPoint ( or handout) explaining the steps of CLOSE Reading. • Anchor Charts for student annotation and Discussion Topics for CLOSE Reading. • Four sets of “Text Dependent Questions”, on set for each CLOSE reading passage. • Common Core Essential questions (to be used after all four passages are read, can be used as a summative assessment or a performance task. • Butterfly Research Report (template to be used to write a complete report on butterflies). This can also be used as a performance task. • RAFT ideas (explanation included if you’re not familiar with RAFTS). • Cognitive Content Dictionary (to be made into a “book” for student vocabulary words, definitions, and pictures). • KWL Chart (you can use this at the beginning of the unit to ascertain what they may already know about butterflies). • Venn Diagram to compare and contrast similarities and differences. • A Tree Map Graphic Organizer ( a grammar component for students to analyze the words in the passages and their parts of speech). • A CLOZE worksheet (a fill-in the blank) worksheet and answer sheet to assess vocabulary attainment and your students’ ability to utilize context clues. • Butterfly Crossword Puzzle (an added extra, can be used for early finishers or homework) with answer sheet and word bank.

Teaching a unit on the Revolutionary War? We have developed this comprehensive research report for your students to organize, create, develop, write, edit, illustrate, present, and assess their Revolutionary War report. This template can be used to complete their formal report or it can be utilized as a study guide to develop their report for them to complete on a computer or device. This Google slides based interactive notebook contains a complete Gold Rush Research Report perfect for Chromebooks, HP Streams, and other devices in a 1:1 classroom. Printable version included! This resources uses file sharing with Google or Microsoft OneDrive. Use these activities to engage students in a whole class, small group, or independent environment. This resource is also perfect for Homeschool students. This original product is provided through web-based Google file sharing, contained on the Internet 'cloud' and allows you and your students to access, edit, and print files from any computer or device. Students work on their report template directly in the file on their device or computer. This product will also work with Microsoft OneDrive (instructions included!) Templates are included to create, develop, write, edit, present, and assess your students’ California Gold Rush Report. This report (or performance task) is also designed to not only to learn and explain the new information, but answer some higher level thinking questions (Common Core Essential Questions) to apply the knowledge they have learned. Students will do all of their research via the Internet and print media (this is not included in this product). Our product is designed to assess and show what your students have learned and share it with you, their parents, and perhaps the class if you’d like them to present it. A simple rubric and student checklist is included. You can use this report template in its entirety, or “pick and choose” the slides you wish to use and tailor it to your students’ needs. This resource contains supplemental materials that align with the Scott Foresman Second Grade Science textbook. It contains Vocabulary Crosswords that accompany that entire textbook for the entire year. We have developed these fun second grade crosswords puzzles to teach, re-teach, practice, or assess vocabulary in the second grade Scott Foresman Science Curriculum for units A, B, and C. Each puzzle contains vocabulary words for each chapter within the unit, as well as some additional words found in each chapter. There is also a word bank for each puzzle so you can copy it to the back of each puzzle if you wish. There are three crossword puzzles created for your students, as well as the answer keys for you. I have used these puzzles to challenge students, to enrich and engage learning, and as a center or centers with teacher or parent helpers to teach and provide practice for science vocabulary and definitions. This important vocabulary development skill is a critical piece of education to support and align with the Common Core Standards for Language Arts under the acquisition of academic vocabulary.
